Reading Classics Challenge

Introducing the ‘Classics Bookclub’

Most of us have probably come into contact with at least a handful of classical literature in school. Some were absolutely dreadful but I’ll have to admit that I actually enjoyed most of them. Which came as a huge surprise to my 13 year old self.

After graduation I came across some of my favorite pieces of literature that I carefully selected randomly pulled out of the open bookshelves around town. All of them were classics. This left me wanting to read more but it also made me regret not having read more classics to this day.

This got me thinking: What would be the best way to go about reading classics?

Which brings us here.

The approach

There are a couple of guides that come up to a Google search and they all recommend a different approach. I even considered enrolling in Comparative Literature after finishing my degree to really unterstand classics. (Thats a random fact, I know, I just wanted to demonstrate how dedicated I was to this idea 😀 ) .

After playing with the idea for a while, I finally decided against another University course and set my mind on a “chronological approach“.

The idea here is to start with the earliest literature and work my way through the centuries. (Obviously I can’t read every classic ever written, so unfortunately there has to be a selection.)

This approach was not recommended by any of the sites I consulted but since I like to be thorough and a lot of literature references older works, I figured this would be the most suitable approach for what I’d like to achieve.

Long story short: This is me starting a one member (for now; wanna join?) bookclub dedicated to tackle classical literature from a more or less chronological perspective, starting with ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh‘.

Join the club

You can join the book club / challenge at any time and I’ll make sure to have an ever growing list of links here to the discussions of the books.

Also if you happen to come up with a catchy name for it (‘Classics Bookclub’ doesn’t sound too inviting for some reason 😀 ), feel free to let me know!
